About VAT Calculator
The VAT Calculator is a free online tool for adding or removing Value Added Tax from any monetary amount. It covers both directions: given a net price (excluding VAT) it calculates the exact VAT amount and the gross total the customer pays, and given a gross price (including VAT) it works backward to reveal the net base and the tax component. It ships with pre-loaded standard VAT rates for more than 20 European countries — from the UK (20%) to Hungary (27%) — and will also accept any custom rate you enter.
You will reach for this tool when writing an invoice in the UK or EU and need to state VAT separately, when reconciling a supplier receipt that only shows a total, when pricing products for an online shop, or when checking that a quoted amount correctly reflects the applicable country rate. The country picker auto-fills the correct rate and currency symbol so you never have to look up rates manually. Results update in real time as you type, with a full three-line breakdown: base amount, VAT charge, and total.
Every calculation runs entirely in your browser. No amounts, rates, or country choices are sent to a server, which matters when you are working with commercially sensitive pricing or client invoices. The tool is free, has no usage cap, and requires no account.
Key Features
Add and remove VAT in one tool
Switch between "Add VAT" (net to gross) and "Remove VAT" (gross to net) with a single click. The formula changes automatically so you never have to reverse the maths yourself.
20+ pre-loaded European rates
Standard VAT rates for the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Hungary, and more are built in. Selecting a country loads the correct rate and currency symbol instantly.
Custom rate support
Not every transaction uses the standard rate. Enter any percentage — reduced rates, zero rates, or rates outside the preset list — and the calculator applies it correctly without needing a page reload.
Three-line result breakdown
Every result shows the base amount, the VAT charge at the chosen percentage, and the final total as separate figures, matching the layout expected on a VAT invoice.
Real-time calculation
Results recalculate on every keystroke so you can adjust figures and see the effect immediately, without pressing a button.
Fully client-side and private
All maths runs in your browser with JavaScript. No figures leave your device, making it safe for confidential pricing work and client invoice drafts.

Mode: Add VAT
Country: United Kingdom (VAT) — 20%

Drafting VAT invoices
When raising an invoice as a VAT-registered business you must state the net amount, the VAT rate, the VAT charge, and the gross total as separate line items. This tool produces all four figures from a single amount entry.

Reconciling supplier receipts
Suppliers sometimes quote only a total inclusive price. The "Remove VAT" mode extracts the net amount and tax portion so you can book the correct figures in your accounts without manual reverse calculations.

Cross-border EU pricing checks
VAT rates differ across Europe — Spain charges 21%, Italy 22%, Hungary 27%. Select the destination country to confirm the correct rate applies before quoting a customer or filing a return.

E-commerce product pricing
Online shops selling to EU consumers must charge the buyer's local VAT rate. Enter your base cost and switch countries to see how the shelf price changes across markets before you publish.

Quick sanity-check on quoted amounts
When a quote arrives and you want to verify the VAT maths before approving payment, enter the gross amount with the stated rate and confirm the breakdown matches what the supplier claims.
